Conduct in the Local Church

"What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not." (1 Corinthians 11:22)

Our conduct in the church or the gathering of saints should be very much in accordance with the grace of God. The Apostle comes down heavily on the conduct of the church at Corinth. They were a group who had factionalism among them. Divisions were rampant as who took whose side. The church was never designed to be divided. They had to live with a “one another” attitude. The church however functioned in a manner which was not praiseworthy. From what we observe they gave much importance to breaking of bread and eating together. The rich ate their stomach full while the poor were not given an equal treatment. The rich were on one side while the poor were on a different scale. The rich never even bothered to share with the poor and Apostle Paul didn’t commend the church on that. Thus when the fellowship meals were served, the rich ate plenty while the poor continued to remain hungry.

How we treat our fellow brother or sister in a local church context is how we treat the church of God. When we are built by His word, our character should be aligned to what the Lord desires. Thus St. Paul stresses on the order of a local church starting from the Lord’s table. He advised the folks to eat at the houses and come to the church. In the context of a local church, there is equality of all and we should stress on the respect we give to one another because it's the Lord Jesus whom we are serving!
